RSS, really simple syndication is not new but it is getting a lot of attention these days. Why? Primarily due to the whole issue of spam email.

RSS is a great technique for getting your message out and it is this reason more and more websites are employing this tool as part of their marketing program.

RSS is a passive marketing tool. By that I mean that the reader needs to go and get the RSS feed and then have a way to read it. Email is a direct tool because you are actively sending it out to your readers.

Email marketing is not dead (yet) and at this point in time, RSS is not going to totally replace it but has advantages over email such as:

• your message is not filter out due to spam or bouned due to "mailbox exceeding quota"
• because readers need to sign up for it, you are pretty much assured your message will be going to those you want it.
• RSS gives you an easy way to syndicate your content
• it give you a way to easily put others' syndicated content on your site

It is the syndication aspect of RSS that is intriguing and exciting.

Syndication = Traffic

Linking101 created an RSS feed a few months back..right now it is the No.2 page that is accessed on the site! Incredible!

The more ways you get your website or content out there, the more potential you have for growth (i.e. visitors, profits, subscribers, etc.). Providing a RSS feed is an excellent avenue to get the search engine spiders to find your website.

The other side of syndication is using others' content on your website. RSS can create keyword-rich pages, increase your Google PageRank, with very little effort since the RSS content is update when the feed source is updated.
